What's being celebrated?
The Augsburg Peace Festival (Augsburger Friedensfest) on August 8 is a public holiday — but only within the city limits of Augsburg. Elsewhere in Bavaria it is a regular workday.
Art. 1 Abs. 1 Nr. 5 of the Bavarian Holiday Act (BayFTG) restricts the holiday to the municipality of Augsburg. Commuters from Friedberg, Königsbrunn or Stadtbergen have no entitlement to the day off.
The festival commemorates August 8, 1650, when Augsburg's Protestant population resumed full religious practice after the Peace of Westphalia. It is the oldest known local peace festival in Europe.
Since 2018 the Augsburger Friedensfest is on the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage — marked by ecumenical services, the Children's Peace Festival, and the city-wide Peace Table on Rathausplatz.
